termites, carpenter ants, wood destroying insects, jersey shore, ocean county, monmouth countyTermites and Carpenter Ants. Wood destroying insects such as termites and carpenter ants are present in 90 percent of the homes we inspect at the Jersey Shore.Termites and carpenter ants can do massive amounts of damage to a house and greatly impact its structural support and monetary value. New Jersey where termites are always an issue, it’s not unusual to find many houses that have been attacked from the foundation to the roof!

How do I prevent Termite and Carpenter Ant infestation? Termites and carpenter ants look for habitats that provide food, moisture and shelter. Any place where wood meets ground qualifies, especially in the moist soils here along the Jersey Shore. Correcting this situation can be as simple as removing any lumber or wood stored around your home. Shrubs and landscaping that contact the house should also be trimmed back. If you cannot see the foundation walls, you cannot see the termite entry points. Since mulch and many other landscaping materials cause the soil to remain moist, you should make sure to minimize mulching around your foundation. Some experts recommend mulching no closer than a foot from your home’s foundation. You should also stack your firewood away from your home, preferably by several feet. Make sure that gutters and downspouts are in good condition and keep rainwater from accumulating. You should also make sure to eliminate any moisture problems in and around your home, especially in basements and crawlspaces.

How do I know if my home has Termites or Carpenter Ants? Your general home inspections is not a termite inspection. It is highly recommended that you obtain a Termite inspection, with a certification, in addition to your general home inspection. All home inspection companies are not certified. HBC Inspections can provide you with both the home inspection and the termite inspection-certification at the same appointment.
